Tom Price to Karratha Stage One
Contract: C498/01

Client: Main Roads WA

Location: Pilbara Region, WA

Timeframe: January 2003 – December 2003

Project Value: $21.6 million

Project Description

Highway Construction constructed 25km of Tom Price to Karratha Road over a year long period in the Pilbara Region. The project also entailed the construction of a single span composite steel beam bridge over the Hamersley Iron railway to the value of $2.4 million. A concrete battered floodway was built and an extensive culvert program was direct managed by Highway Construction in the cyclone prone area.

Highway Construction also designed the reinforced earth substructure for the bridge. The project involved the movement of 850,000 m3 of fill with embankments up to 20m high. The excavation of 250,000m3 of rock included drilling and blasting over 150,000 m3 of rock up to 18m depth. The protection of Aboriginal heritage sites and over 12,000m2 of rock was also effectively managed by Highway Construction.

Highway Construction was pleased with the standard of work achieved, given the complexities of the project in very harsh conditions. The standard of work has been commended by our peers in the construction industry.

Special Features/Challenges:
  • Drilling and blasting adjacent to the railway line.
  • Development of water sources through drilling program.
  • Preparation and presentation of a rail safety plan to Rio Tinto for the project.
