Project Description

Highway Construction, through the company’s mining infrastructure business delivery entity HICAL, in partnership with B & J Catalano and Albem Operations, performed the construction of a mine site access road and new highway intersection for Chinese mining contractor Metallurgical Corporation of China on the Sino Iron Project near Karratha. Future infrastructure works for HICAL on this project are anticipated to follow from strong outcomes being achieved this project.


North West Coastal Hwy widening

Works involved the widening of 768m of North West Coastal Hwy at the Sino Steel Mine Site intersection. HICAL constructed a slip lane and turning pocket into Sino Steel mine site, and a slip lane and turning pocket into Red River Camp.

The involved challenges / special features were:
  • Constructing temporary pavement for existing traffic
  • Widening pavement under traffic and oversize loads
  • Tight time frame to construct the intersection
  • Telstra optic fiber across highway and conflicting with open drain
  • 365m of cement stabilised pavement across floodway

Red River Access Rd

HICAL constructed 1.7km of new access road into Erramara village (Mine site camp). The access road is 6.8m wide with 1m wide shoulder on each side.

The involved challenges / special features were:
  • Aboriginal heritage on site. Traditional owner was on site to supervise clearing
  • Drill and blasting
  • Design changes due to conflicts with gas pipeline and existing infrastructure
