North West Coastal Highway
C1841/00
Main Roads WA
Carnarvon, WA
October 2001 – August 2002
$11.4 million
The project was located near Carnarvon in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia. Works comprised approximately 16km of road reconstruction and realignment with associated earthworks and clearing. Drainage works included the installation of culverts, floodways and off road drainage. A road train breakdown area, driveways, and parking bays were also completed.
Bridgework over the Gascoyne River comprised construction of a 10-span, 230m long, composite reinforced concrete and steel beam bridge. Highway Construction subcontracted Barclay Mowlem to build the $5.8 million bridge.
Highway Construction received positive feedback for engaging with the local community about environmental and Aboriginal concerns and minimising disturbance to traffic in the area. In addition, the company received a strong performance report from our client, Main Roads WA, in particular for partnering and the quality of the finished product.
- Demolition of the old single lane timber bridge.
- Reconstruct 16 km of NWCH using a cement stabilised sand / clay basecourse material.
- Protection of Aboriginal sites at bridge location during construction and a course in Aboriginal awareness arranged by Highway Construction for site management.
