Lancelin to Cervantes
Contract: C62/06

Client: Main Roads WA

Location: Lancelin, WA

Timeframe: May 2007 – April 2008

Project Value: $14.8 million

Project Description

Stage 1 of the construction of Indian Ocean Drive between Lancelin and Cervantes has been recently completed, with the Lancelin to Ocean Farm Estate section opened to the public on March 14.

The works comprised construction of approximately 10.5km of new coastal alignment involving major earthworks and substantial clearing. Two new connecting roads were built at Lancelin Road (940m) and at Ocean Farms Estate (400m). The works also consist of extensive drainage construction, including culverts, kerbing, stormwater drains, catchpits, various surface drains and rock protection.

Safety traffic barriers at steep embankments and street lighting and staging at the Indian Ocean Drive/Lancelin intersection is to be installed as well. In total, Highway Construction expects to complete 200,000m3 of limestone rock removal and 300,000m3 of earthworks.

Special Features/Challenges:
  • Contractor initiated innovation to crush surplus in-situ rock to manufacture limestone sub-base, thereby minimising spoil. Over 70,000 tonnes crushed.
  • Development of water source (bore) on site.
  • Due care given to the surrounding nature reserve and the risk of unexploded ordinates in the area.
