Project Description

Highway Construction is undertaking the 4.5km widening of Kwinana Freeway between Leach and Roe highways from two to three traffic lanes in each direction. The widening of the freeway is expected to significantly improve traffic capacity, resulting in reduced travel times for motorists in the area, and increase the capability and efficiency of freight transport serving the Port of Fremantle. Road safety will also be improved by the realignent and widening of the freeway.

The construction of an intersection at South Street and Fiona Wood Road will ensure easy and safe access to the soon to be completed Fiona Stanley Hospital.   

The initial works package includes:
  • 4.5km widening of Kwinana Freeway between Leach and Roe highways
  • Construction of a new intersection at South Street and Fiona Wood Road
  • Resurfacing of the full width of the freeway between Leach and Roe highways
  • Construction of noise walls and screen walls
  • Realignment of shared paths along the freeway
  • Construction and/or modification of all associated drainage
  • New and upgraded freeway lighting
  • Revegation and landscaping
The optional works include:
  • Construction of a new northbound exit ramp at South Street, including modifications to the shared path
  • Construction of Barry Marshall Parade extension to connect to Murdoch Station
  • Upgrade of Murdoch Station car park and access roads

Special Features/Challenges: 

  • Complex traffic management requirements in very highly trafficked area
  • Construction of noise walls for traffic noise mitigation; and screen walls to improve residential amenity and privacy
  • Extensive protection and/or relocation of services
