The works comprise widening/overlay and reconstruction on two adjacent sections of the Great Northern Highway for a total of 4.13 km in the City of Swan, south of Bullsbrook. The project is to be conducted in two separable portions over two consecutive summer periods. In the first season, construction works will be undertaken between Padbury Avenue and Haddrill Road. Season two works will take place between Padbury Avenue and Lennard Street.
The upgrade to the Great Northern Highway is designed to create a safer road that is better suited to carrying the type and volume of traffic that uses the road. The road is being widened, and will include an 800m long overtaking lane in both directions, turning pockets into side roads, stormwater and offroad drainage, and the construction of culverts to improve water flow around the road.
Other features of the works include the construction of new bus bays, side road intersections and traffic islands, the installation of safety barriers and new traffic lighting, landscaping and associated drainage works. Works will also comprise the construction of dual use paths and cycle paths. Sealed Temporary Driving Surfaces shall be provided where required to facilitate continuous 2-way traffic during construction. The major benefit of the widening and reconstruction works will be a safer and improved journey for the general public and the transport industry on this highly trafficked road. Off-road drainage and the construction of culverts will also allow improved water flow around the works.
