Project Description
The Dampier Highway Duplication design and construct project is being undertaken by the Highway Works Albem (HWA) Joint Venture in partnership with Main Roads WA.
The project has initially been awarded for the construction of 7km of new road between the Karratha townsite and airport. The optional works involve extending the road an additional 5km from the airport to the Burrup Road intersection.
The initial works package includes:
Duplicating the highway between Balmoral Road (Karratha townsite) and Bayly Avenue (airport turn off);
Linking 10 intersections into the new highway;
Construction of a new bridge at Seven Mile Creek;
Strengthening works and improvements to the existing bridge at Seven Mile Creek;
Construction of signalised intersections at the intersections with Madigan Road and the relocated Rubbish Tip Road;
Resurfacing of the existing Highway and connecting roads;
Improvements to pedestrian linkages; and
Construction of an on road cycling facility
The optional works include:
Duplicating the highway between Bayly Avenue (airport turn off) and Burrup Road (near Dampier);
Construction of a signalised intersection at the Burrup Road intersection with Dampier Highway
Construction across the salt flat causeway
Resurfacing of the existing Highway and connecting roads;
Improvements to pedestrian linkages; and
Construction of an on road cycling facility
Design works commenced in November 2010 with construction from April 2011 to December 2012.
Special Features/Challenges:
Construction of high strength concrete pavements at critical intersections
Construction of a second carriageway across a 3km salt flat causeway
Drilling and blasting at the Burrup including protection of heritage sites and the Dampier Bunbury pipeline
Installation of traffic signals
