Investing in human capital pays better dividends than investing in machinery
Our people are our most valuable asset. Highway Construction has an excellent record in retaining staff. The Company has a philosophy of investing in its people rather than in the ownership of plant and equipment. This direction was established in the late 1980’s when the model was somewhat unconventional and innovative.
Interestingly, many others in the industry have now adopted this philosophy.
Our engineers are mentored by senior staff and given sufficient time and resources to develop their skills in a friendly, supportive environment. In this way, we build technical expertise and deliver engineering excellence.
We retain staff by providing excellent remuneration, entitlements, ongoing training and real prospects for advancement within the company. Highway Construction has always believed in rewarding well for extraordinary performance through company vacations and other bonuses.
As an equal opportunity employer, Highway Construction appoints staff members who are committed to excellence and working as a team. They must also demonstrate initiative and work independently when required. In order to maintain performance standards and empower staff, we have a ‘no blame culture,’ set benchmarks for workplace satisfaction, and encourage joint-decision making. Our staff are widely recognised for their respect and conduct towards each other, their customers, stake holders and the general public.
Traineeships
Highway Construction believes strongly in giving young people a head start. We are a registered participant in the “Priority Start Building Policy” program, a WA Department of Education and Training program to engage apprentices and trainees in the construction industry. We were also the first civil contractor to take on a trainee through the REACH Foundation, a Main Roads WA initiative.
Our current trainees have been given the opportunity to obtain vital practical learning and experience with Highway Construction on project sites whilst undertaking study in civil construction. A previous trainee has since progressed to become a Supervisor on one of our project sites. Highway Construction is greatly satisfied with the contribution of our trainees and we hope that they will become long-term employees with significant scope for advancement within the company.
If you are interested in developing a career in the civil construction industry, we encourage you to visit the Reach Foundation or the Department of Education & Training ApprentiCentre for more information. Highway Construction generally utilises these programs to engage trainees. If you are interested in a traineeship with our company, please feel free to Apply Online and we will give your application due consideration.
